Buy a Projector
First thing’s first: you’re going to need to invest in a backyard movie projector. Look for one that’s portable, wireless and bluetooth enabled, so you can stream movies right off your phone or laptop, which should set you back around $150-200. If you want to geek out and be sure you’re buying the best of the best, read this deep dive into projectors first.
Figure Out Your Screen
Ideally, you’ve got a large, blank exterior wall to project your movie onto, but if that’s not available try hanging a flat white bed sheet from a clothes line, porch roof, or anywhere else that makes sense. Be aware that on a breezy night, you might have to weigh down the bottom of the sheet to keep it taught and still. If you want to go with something a bit more professional, this projector screen can be hung or assembled on its own stand.
Make it Comfy
Your friends and family are going to be sitting in your yard for the duration of a film, so you’ll want to make sure they’re completely comfortable. Do a big Target haul of throw pillows and blankets, and perhaps some bean bag chairs, hammocks, or foldable picnic chairs if you’re feeling fancy.
Pick a Movie
There’s something really soothing about revisiting old classics during such an unpredictable year. Get a dose of 80s nostalgia with family-friendly films like Back to the Future, The Goonies, Mystic Pizza, Footloose, Top Gun, or Dirty Dancing. Here’s a recent list of the best 80s movies on Netflix right now.
Assemble Your Snacks
Given the pandemic, it’s probably not a great idea to have everybody scooping popcorn from a shared container with their hands. Opt for individual packets instead (this variety pack will satisfy sweet, salty, and butter fans), or pop and season your own and distribute it in retro containers. Make sure you also have adult and kid-friendly beverages to wash the popcorn down.
Pick Up These Finishing Touches:
- Bug spray and citronella candles to keep the mosquitos at bay
- Beer koozies
- An ice bucket for rosé
- A couple of solar-powered, LED outdoor lamps to highlight steps or any other hazards in your yard
- Face masks and hand sanitiser to be extra safe
